LCD was founded on the principle of medical-legal collaboration to better serve its clients. In 2010, LCD continued this tradition by developing a Medical-Legal Partnership (MLP) with the Family Practice & Counseling Network, a network of three federally-qualified nurse-managed health centers that provide health services to thousands of Philadelphians. This is the first nurse-led MLP in the country. MLP is an innovative health care delivery model that integrates legal assistance as a core component of patient care. Based on the recognition that health is as dependent on social conditions as it is on accessing and receiving quality healthcare, MLPs place legal staff on-site at healthcare institutions as part of the healthcare team to alleviate the hardships associated with problems like unsafe housing, hunger, and income insecurity that may be contributing to negative health outcomes and lower quality of life. LCD opened its newest MLP at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children in spring 2011.
